Marty’s Office

I donated this project to St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Royal Oak, MI. Marty won the auction and I created this space for her. She quilts for a hobby, and wanted a sewing room that utilized several pieces of furniture that she already possessed.

The crown-jewel of this space is the floating shelf that surrounds the entire room. I drilled 1/2″ rebar back into the studs to hold the weight. You could cram about 20 kindergarteners on top of this shelf (or maybe just stacks of books!). Marty had always wanted a huge map of the world, so we worked that in too.

Slat boards give Marty unending options to keep sewing tools and notions at her fingertips. Black counter-tops over her existing dresser and file cabinet provide 3 different work stations. A full-lite door was installed where there used to be a window, so now you just need to stand up and crack the door open to let the dog out into the back-yard!

Back-to-back bedrooms had tiny, little closets. The closet in the office was sacrificed to create a normal sized closet in the guest bedroom. I repaired the hardwood floor by re-arranging the existing flooring slats. Junction boxes in the unfinished basement allowed for re-routing of the electrical. Really wishing I had finished the base trim to the right of the heat register and installed the cover plate on the outlet before I took this picture. Oh, and I just noticed that the wall above the door isn’t painted…Yeesh!

On the wall that previously had a closet door, I installed the existing shelving Marty wanted me to utilize. I built a shelf across the top, that matches the wrap-around floating shelf, for vinyl albums and a television area. Crown molding was installed around the room and a black background really makes her quilts pop.
